The center was created in accordance with the decision of the Academic Council of the Prykarpattia National University named after Vasyl Stefanyk dated January 1, 1995 and the resolution of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences dated April 6, 1994. The field of activity is the study of the Ukrainian national liberation movement. The Center prepared the publication “Western Ukrainian People’s Republic 1918-1923: History” (2001); “Western Ukrainian People’s Republic. 1918-1923. Documents and materials. 5 volumes. 8 books. (2001-2011)”; “Ukrainian national liberation movement in Prykarpattia in the 20th century. Documents and materials” 3 vols. 7 books; “Western Ukrainian People’s Republic 1918-1923. Encyclopedia” 2 volumes (2018-2020). The unit actively cooperates with the Institute of Ukrainian Studies named after I. Krypyakevych of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and other institutions. The unit organizes international scientific conferences: “Roman Shukhevych in the Ukrainian National Liberation Movement of the 20th Century” (17-18.05.2007), “Stepan Bandera in the Ukrainian National Liberation Movement of the 20th Century” (11.12.2008), organizes conferences every 5 years devoted to ZUNR.
